The year is 1954. US Marshall Teddy Daniels and his new partner, Chuck Aule, are sent to
Shutter Island to investigate the disappearance of a mental patient, a murderess. She had
escaped even though she was under constant surveillance in a locked chamber.
Shutter Island, formerly an army facility, is the site for the Ashecliffe Hospital for the
Criminally Insane. Their investigation is being stonewalled by the hospital director. Their
search continues even in the wake of a hurricane and even complicated by more murders. There
is evidence that the hospital is performing radical brain surgery as part of a secret ops program.
Daniels begins to fear that he is being fed psychotropic drugs to prevent him from any further
investigation. He fears that the two of them will never leave the island. Their investigations
end in an unexpected shocking finale.
Shutter Island is a fast-paced, intense suspense novel. The story is a complex one
with twists and turns to baffle the reader. The feeling of suspense is constant until it erupts
in a shocking ending. The details of the experiments are chilling and mind boggling. One
wonders how much of this is fact and how much is a figment of the author's imagination.
