Daisy Fletcher
(nee Dalrymple) hopes that her Chief Inspector husband Alec is going
to be able to attend his daughter Belinda’s sports day, but
such is not to be. A trio of bodies has been dug up in Epping Forest
and requires urgent investigations. The bodies were not all buried
at once, rather there is a space of several months in between each
one and they have all been shot. Who is doing it, and are they going
to strike again? Meanwhile Daisy has a spot of her own sleuthing
to do.
You get two books in one with this nineteenth entry in the popular
series. First and foremost this is unusually more Alec’s book
than his wife’s, with him and his team investigating an absorbing
case in true police procedural mode. Daisy’s own detecting
mostly starts a lot later and is more in the usual style as Daisy
and her two friends Sakari and Melanie investigate murder most foul
in Saffron Walden. The story is told in alternate chapters, with
Alec’s being in my opinion the most gripping, although weaving
the two together makes for an interesting effect. The result is
a book that has plenty packed into it although classic puzzle whodunit
fans might be disappointed by a departure from the type of murders
normally found in this series, but saying more would produce plot
spoilers. To sum up this is a series that continues to come up with
fresh new ways to present the crimes investigated by the Fletchers
and this is another one that works pretty well.
