Changes are expected in Depression-era Darling, Alabama, as strangers
ride the rails, looking for jobs. Citizens are locking their doors
and keeping an eye out for strangers-- like the two women who just
arrived and the gentleman who followed. The Darling Dahlias aren’t
sure if he’s a good guy or a bad man, but they’re going
to find out – with Verna at the helm.
Verna is mystery reader. She wants to know why two good-looking
women would change their names and their appearance. And the identity
of the man knocking on her door, asking so many questions. Is he
a secret agent, angry husband, killer?
It’s a lively mystery riddled with gossip and good intentions.
Readers follow along as the ladies solve the mystery and show personal
concern for Myra May and Violet, Lizzy and her overbearing mother,
and Bessie’s haunted past. Let’s hope everything is
resolved quickly so the ladies can get back to gardening.
Susan Wittig Albert gives fans another popular series. The author
is very thorough in creating the characters and the 1930s dialogue
and period. It may have been a hard time, but it was also simple
and personal compared to today.
This is my first Darling Dahlia mystery. Luckily for me a character
list is included at the front of the book. There are also some spoilers
so you may want to start with the first book in the series: The
Darling Dahlias and the Cucumber Tree. Within the mystery,
readers are treated to an edition of the Garden Gate newsletter.
And at the end are The Dahlia’s Dirty Dozen House Cleaning
Tips and some refreshing recipes.
