Autumn in Pennsylvania.
Sounds beautiful, right? The crunch of the leaves, a crisp chill
in the air, a quiet college campus nestled in the countryside. Well,
as writer-turned-professor Phoebe Hall discovers, sometimes autumn
is much more deadly than scenic! After the disgrace of being accused
of plagiarism, celebrity biographer Hall is grateful for the chance
to get out of New York and try to recover from both professional
and personal turbulence. Her oldest friend, Glenda Johns, is President
of Lyle College, and has offered Phoebe a lifeline – the chance
to teach writing for a few months. Things are not what they seem
to be at Lyle, however. After a second student goes missing, Glenda
asks Phoebe to quietly investigate the disappearances and the existence
of The Sixes, a nebulous group that might or might not be involved.
Pushing aside memories of her own brush with secret societies, Phoebe
agrees.
What she discovers
is dangerous, confusing, and very possibly deadly. As she begins
asking questions, digging into events that have been kept quiet,
Phoebe realizes that she is in the middle of something bigger, and
more dangerous than anyone suspects. Disappearances become murders,
pranks become more than just mischief, and Phoebe’s own secrets
bubble to the surface. Phoebe becomes victim as well as investigator
and trust becomes a very big issue!
The Sixes, by Kate White, is a very creepy book. Not vampire
or slasher creepy - much more subtle. The kind of creepy where you
feel the cold fingers of fear on your neck, or where you need to
check the locks on the doors one more time. Insignificant events,
conversations and people slowly become clues, revelations and suspects.
I had a very hard time putting this book down. It drew me in quickly
and pulled me along on the ride toward the conclusion. Great characters,
a compelling story, and a good, strong dose of suspense…what’s
not to like! |
