Because Alan Banks is on vacation in the United States, DI Annie
Cabot takes the call from Banks' former neighbor, Janet Doyle, who
reports that she has discovered a gun hidden in her home by her
daughter, Erin. The attempt to retrieve the gun by the Armed Response
Team ends tragically.
When Banks returns, he finds his daughter, Tracy, is missing in
the company of the weapon's owner, Geoffrey McCready, Eastvale's
"bad boy." When Annie finds Tracy and attempts to persuade
her to turn herself into the police, McCready shoots her. Banks
launches a desperate investigation to rescue the seriously wounded
Annie and to extricate his daughter from her dangerous situation.
Robinson has given his readers another well written and well plotted
case in his familiar Yorkshire setting. This is an insightful view
of Tracy's tension between her responsibilities and her attempt
for self realization. He probes into Banks' midlife crisis and his
relation with Annie, and with his attempt to bridge the riff between
himself and his daughter.
Yet another Robinson book not to be missed
