I have always been a fan of the TV show, Bones, and was
aware that the main character is based upon the experiences of forensic
anthropologist, Kathy Reichs, who writes the screenplays for the
Bones” TV show. Fascinated by this talented woman, I wanted
to read Reichs’ latest release, Bones Are Forever, to
see if the books are similar to the TV series.
In this novel, Tempe is working in Montreal and is partners with
Detective Andrew Ryan, though the romance between them that began
at the FBI training center at Quantico is over. They are asked to
report to an apartment after a dead infant is discovered, and Tempe
soon discovers the bones of two more dead infants. Infanticide may
be hard to stomach for some, and if this applies to you, don’t
read this book.
Tempe and Ryan begin a search for the infant’s missing mother,
an aboriginal (Indian) prostitute. Their quest takes them to Edmonton,
Canada, where Tempe’s old lover, Sergeant Oliver Hasty, enters
the scene, creating additional friction. After discovering another
body, the trail leads them into the Northewest Territories to Yellowknife
– a trip that places Tempe in danger.
I really enjoyed the Temperance Brennan of Kathy Reichs’ book,
and have discovered that there is a vast difference between the
TV character and the novel Tempe. The TV character is a less complicated
version. The Tempe found in Bones Are Forever is a head strong,
highly intelligent female who has a dry sense of humor, despite
the seriousness of her profession.
The first pages are loaded with information on forensic details,
which made the beginning sluggish, but the tense story plot, vivid
settings, and excellent character descriptions made this an entertaining
and enjoyable read for me.
