Sookie Stackhouse
has always been a little bit fickle. In this installment of the
series, she's having some serious trouble with her relationship
with Eric Northman so the book is a little light on sexy sizzle.
Of course, Eric has troubles of his own: his vampire king is considering
whether to let him live (um, if he's undead, is he unliving?), a
dead body is cluttering up his lawn, and he just might have to trade
Sookie in on a vampire mate. And Eric isn't all Sookie has on her
mind either -- her fairy kin are giving her headaches and her boss's
main squeeze might possibly want her dead. This novel feels like
a transition piece for the series. It does contain a mystery with
the aforementioned dead body, but mostly it's about making a small
shift in Sookie's love life and working out her relationships with
her fairy kin. I loved the fairies. They were a wonderful balance
of psychotic and innocent. And when Sookie finds out she gets one
wish -- the answer to "What does she wish for?" turns
the series in a whole new direction. I enjoyed visiting with Sookie;
it had been a while. It's nice to see she still has a few twists
up her sleeve.
