Nicolaa de la Haye, castellan of Lincoln Castle has provided a feast to celebrate the opening of a new foundling home. The guests at the feast are the Guild Leaders from town. While everyone is making merry, servant Aubrey Tecerl and a Guild Leader’s wife sneak away for a lovers tryst in the Tower. When they part ways Tercel is murdered. Nicolaa’s son Richard begins the investigations while word is sent to Bascot, the Templar Knight. Nicolaa wants him to lead the investigation. When the dead servant’s past unravels, Bascot is faced with a long list of suspects – which gives Ash the ability to pull out every twist and turn she can, and she does it well.

What an enjoyable historical mystery. This is my first Templar Knight mystery and I knew within the first chapter this was a series for me. A Deadly Penance is full of memorable characters, historical atmosphere, and strong dialogue. It’s a solid plot with a cozy feel. The Templar Knight series is most definitely a winning Historical mystery series.

Reviewer's Note: The author mentions Lincoln is a real place and Nicolaa de la Haye was the hereditary castellan.
