Gently With The Painters
Robinson (Constable and
Robinson) George Gently has been promoted to superintendent, and is not at all happy about it. Used to being on the case, shuffling papers behind a desk is his idea of hell and he is not enjoying the organized crime case he is working on either. He wants a juicy murder mystery, and the one making headlines would be his personal choice. It concerns the stabbing of an amateur artist called Shirley Johnson, a member of the Palette Group headed by a well-known professional artist. The most likely suspect is the woman·s husband Derek, a wartime air ace turned realtor, but something tells Gently that this is not such a simple matter. As ever with this series there is a lot to enjoy. This time Gently is pitted against the dogged local detective Hansom and shiny newcomer Stephens as they all hasten to solve the case in their own ways. There is plenty of tongue-in-cheek satire at the earnest efforts of the artists, as well as the pompous utterances of their leader, Mallows, as he pontificates on Art. Expect red herrings galore and various surprises as the detectives dig deeper and uncover what is really going on. This is perhaps the best kind of historical fiction; written at the time and resurrected to be enjoyed now and give us an on-the-spot view of the past. Instead of being about life in Norfolk in 1960 this tale is merely set then, and everything takes place within the parameters of how life was lived back then. Quite a history lesson as well as a thoroughly entertaining detective story, the best kind of history lesson. Other reviews in this series Gently
