George Pellecanos is one of my favorite authors. He skips the really
graphic violence and sex in this book in favor of just telling a
great story. Don't get me wrong, there are some brutal episodes,
but it isn't just gratuitous violence.
Derek Strange is no longer a cop, he has become a private investigator.
A woman comes to him asking for help in recovering a cheap ring
with sentimental value. His investigation leads him into the turf
of his former partner, Frank "Hound Dog" Vaughn, where
a local drug dealer with a connection to the stolen ring, has been
murdered. The two men are quickly put on the trail of a ruthless
killer called "Red Fury." The stakes get higher as the
action escalates. Then there is the lady who wants her ring back...or
does she???
Strange and Vaughn each have their own way of pursuing the investigation,
but the two together make a fascinating story.
What it Was takes place in Washington D.C. in 1972, Pellecano's
favorite place and time. The vintage cars, clothes and R & B
tunes make the setting realistic, and add a bit of nostalgia. There
is a compelling cast of weird characters and lots of action in a
multi-layered plot that will keep you reading.
