You do the right thing and get kicked off the police force. Then you end up in a new city as a private eye looking for a dog. This is not just any dog --- Baroness von Tannelwald is the number one Weimaraner in the country. This dog just won best in show at Westminster. This dog would not be easy to hide …and yet the dog is missing.

Eli Paxton is a nice guy who follows the rules. That got him kicked off of the Chicago Police Force. He is now a private eye in Cincinnati. Not having a job for a while, he accepts Hubert Lantz’s job offer to find the missing dog. Lantz is the handler for Baroness. He instructed his girl Alice Dent to ship the dog back to owner Maurice Nettles in Arizona. The plane arrived …the dog didn’t. Alice and her car were found at the bottom of Little Miami River. Now wherever Eli goes – people are missing or dead. What is so special about this dog?

Things to ponder: Who is shooting at Eli? Why was the plane 4 hours late?

I enjoy a good detective novel. I am also a fan of the old black and white Saint movies. Eli Paxton is a fun character that I want to see more of in the future. He took me on a merry chase around the country and even into Mexico. Fast paced action with lots of twists and turns. This is a well written book. It was originally published in the mid 1990’s but the author could not sign a 3 book deal at the time. The good news is the author has signed with a new publisher and will be writing more Eli Paxton novels. I am looking forward to more adventures with Eli Paxton. The next in the series is The Trojan Colt. So if you like your mystery laced with a good private eye, then Dog In The Manger is the book for you.

Reviewer's Note: There is a bonus story included in the book -Even Butterflies Can Sting
