In
Afghanistan, an Army Sergeant travels through the country
carrying an unknown cargo. Unfortunately, his dangerous journey
ends unexpectedly, and his superiors are not happy.
In the US, King and Maxwell are driving in the rain, discussing
New Zealand and speedos, when they come across a teen walking
in the rain. When Michelle approaches the young man named
Tyler, he pulls a gun, making her react with compassion and
concern. As the teen’s story slowly unfolds, Michelle
finds her maternal instinct switching into high gear with
her need to help Tyler find out the full story on his father’s
death – something he has been unable to find about from
his much hated step mother. When they start asking questions,
the first government sedan appears, and King and Maxwell find
themselves outrunning bullets, explosions and more as they
try to uncover the truth.
The secrecy, surveillance,
hacking, bullets, running, and explosions are nonstop. I was
so drawn in, I was talking to myself. Which agency is it?!
Who is giving the orders? Let me tell you, conspiracies abound
in this one. I was glued to my iPod, digging deep, trying
to sort the clues and false leads. By the end, I was still
totally stunned. Baldacci challenges the conspiracy theorist
in us all. What a stimulating, entertaining listen!
Be warned;
the storyline does carry spoilers of previous titles in this
series. I highly recommend Split Second, the first
book in this series, and if you haven’t tried Baldacci’s
Camel Club series, I recommend Hell’s
Corner – another exciting ride.
Narrators of the
audio version are Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy. It’s
an intense narration – as a true thriller should be.
The smartest thing this publisher did was team these two up.
McLarty
and Cassidy have narrated other Baldacci titles. McLarty is
a seasoned narrator, popular actor, and published author.
He’s narrated titles by Danielle Steel, Stephen King,
Ed McBain, Clive Cussler, Elmore Leonard, and more. Orlagh
Cassidy is an actress on stage, film and TV. She’s narrated
titles by Jacqueline Winspear, James Patterson, Erica Spindler,
Laurie Viera Rigler and more.
