Lauren
Vancouver is the administrator of a private pet rescue
facility, HotRescues, located in San Fernando Valley,
California. When the facility’s owner, Dante DeFrancisco,
asks Lauren to attend the filming of a movie nearby
to insure no dogs are mistreated, Lauren accepts. On
the set, she meets an animal safety representative,
animal and human stars, and her friend, Carlie Stellan,
who has a TV show.
When
the movie’s director is run over shortly after
he and Carlie argue over the dogs’ safety, Carlie
becomes the prime suspect. Lauren, who has
previous success as an amateur sleuth, is determined
to prove Carlie’s innocence. As the list of potential
suspects builds, Lauren also contends with a break-in
at her shelter and possible poisoning attempt there.
In addition, Lauren tries to find new homes for her
dogs, even the poodles being used on the film.
I
love this series. Lauren is a very caring and intelligent
character who will do whatever she can for her friends,
even if it places her own life in jeopardy. I was happy
to see many of the characters in the previous books
return, but especially her sexy beau, Matt Kingston,
a captain with the L.A. Animal Services, who is protective,
even when Lauren feels it’s unnecessary.
Oodles
of Poodles is
a fast-paced mystery with a solid plot and an intriguing
glimpse into the film industry, especially movies that
feature animals. Though there are characters from earlier
books, Ms. Johnston does an excellent job of incorporating
them into the plot without the need to have read the
previous releases. In short, Ms. Johnson
has written another masterfully wrought whodunit, and
one I thoroughly enjoyed. Oodles of Poodles is
a delightful read and a must for all mystery and pet
lovers.
