The members of the Bayside
Book Writers are all looking forward to hearing the celebrated
storytellers at their local library in Oyster Bay. They will
perform folk tales that have been handed down for generations.
The most famous storyteller is Violetta Devereaux. She shocks
her audience by saying she would soon be a ghost. Laurel would
love to interview her for the Gazette newspaper after the
performance. Lowell, Violetta's assistant, (and cousin of
Dixie who owns Grumpy's Diner) tells Laurel no interviews.
Violetta surprises them all by saying yes and she’ll
go to Olivia's gatekeeper's cottage and do the interview there.
Olivia waits in the parking lot for Violetta, but she never
shows up. So Olivia goes back into the building to look for
her. She sees Rawlings and then Lowell. Lowell is distraught
and very agitated. So Olivia continues into the conference
room and finds a dead Violetta. Olivia had better be careful
trying to solve this murder because upsetting the wrong person
could get her permanently shelved.
Things to ponder: Was Professor Alfred Hick's death really
an accident? What is the treasure Violetta was talking about?
Is Violetta's death connected to the death of Professor Hicks?
Ellery Adams weaves a tale with an intriguing plot that keeps
you turning those pages. She pulls you in right from the start
and you have a hard time letting go of the story to do anything
else. I love the characters and look forward to visiting with
them in each Books By the Bay Mystery Series. Ellery Adams
does not disappoint – I was compelled to continue reading
well into the wee hours because I needed to find out what
happened next. I also enjoyed reading the author quotes at
the beginning of each chapter. So if you like your mystery
with a literary feel, then you should be reading Poisoned
Prose.
