| The
last we remember of Rebus, he retired and then decided to
assist Cold Cases Unit. Now, he’s returning to the Edinburgh
police as a Detective Sergeant. Rebus is coming back to changes
– the eight regional Scottish forces will merge and
become Police Scotland with two divisions – Edinburgh,
plus Lothians and Scottish Borders. Siobhan Clarke, once Rebus’
Detective Sergeant, is now a Detective Inspector, and Rebus’
superior. We all know how Rebus feels about superiors. This
should be interesting.
There
are multiple storylines - the first being Rebus and a cold
case.Rebus
is driving with a criminal from his past. He’s trying
to link Peter Meikle to a missing girl. Rebus also works a
car accident with a young girl. He knows there’s more
to it and interviews the girl’s father and boyfriend.
Then, Malcolm Fox of Complaints arrives with a Cold Case murder
involving a police division Rebus was part of known as The
Saints of the Shadow Bible. Rebus swore his loyalty as a Saint
on “The Shadow Bible” but will he keep it?
Saints
of the Shadow Bible takes readers/listeners back to the
now familiar Edinburgh where Rebus’ is again creating
a path of his own to get answers. It’s a complex, multilayered
mystery with views from different characters. Readers also
get to know Malcom Fox (the internal affairs cop) and what
makes him tick. I’ve always enjoyed this series, but
I seem to like Rebus more now than in the past. Maybe he’s
mellowing. He certainly treats Siobhan with a bit of respect
even though he still refuses to take advice or heed warnings.

Macpherson narrates this Rebus novel as a well as past novels.
Macpherson is a well-known Theater and Television actor. He’s
still best known for Taggart, a Scottish detective show.
