The idyllic
village of Nether Monkslip boasts many shops run by local
craftspeople and has an active Women''s Institute. Unfortunately
this group has the hugely unpopular Wanda Batton-Smythe as
its president, so perhaps it is not surprising when she is
found dead at the Harvest Fayre. At first it appears to be
an accident, but this village has as its new vicar one Max
Tudor, formerly an agent for MI5.
This village cozy has all the classic ingredients you expect:
pretty village bursting at the seams with quaint characters,
unusual amateur sleuth, victim everybody hated etc. Written
first and foremost for the US market there are a few things
a true Brit will be frowning over but apart from that it ticks
all the boxes. Anybody who loves villages or wonders what
it would be like to live in one will certainly enjoy the wealth
of description, as this is a book where everything is described
in great detail. At times even the mystery takes a back seat
to all this, but amongst the verbiage are many witticisms
and insightful remarks about life in modern Britain. If you
are a UK resident who enjoys cozy mysteries and wishes more
were published over here then this ought to suit.
