Baxley Powell is the mother of
ten-year-old daughter, Larissa. Her Special Ops husband, Roland,
was declared dead two years earlier, but the Army failed to
pay her the insurance money due her. To make ends meet, she
works part time as a pet walker, landscaper, and psychic consultant
who “dreamwalks” or communicates with the dead
to help the police solve crimes.
Baxley’s riding with Sheriff Wayne Thompson when an
urgent call comes in alerting them that Morgan Gilroy has
been stabbed. After they arrive, Morgan whispers to Baxley,
“Bubba done it” before he dies. Baxley is aware
of four “Bubbas” who may have had reason to stab
him, including her brother-in-law, Bubba Powell. Powell dated
Morgan’s ex when they were younger, but she’s
convinced Roland’s brother couldn’t be the murderer.
The more Baxley investigates, the guiltier each Bubba looks.
Frustrated, Baxley dreamwalks to reach the deceased Morgan,
but is stopped by a tattooed woman on the other side. Eerie
enough, but
Baxley also feels that someone is watching her. Who can it
be?
Bubba Done It is a fast-paced, tense thriller with
just the right eerie paranormal elements to keep me glued
to the book. Maggie Toussaint never disappoints, and I love
the southern, homespun atmosphere she creates through dialogue
and settings. Her characters are all wonderfully developed.
Baxley is a strong character, one determined to support herself
and her daughter. Despite everything, she’s sure her
husband Roland is still alive. Ten-year-old Larissa appears
to have inherited the psychic talent as well, for she’s
been dreaming of seeing her dead best friend floating in water.
Add a gruff sheriff and a newspaper reporter seeking a break
out story, and the result is an exciting psychic mystery guaranteed
to keep you begging for more.
