“Four
murders, I thought, four murders on one night. Three of them
throat-cuttings. All of them because Irwin Dressler had decided
to look into the destruction of the career of an as-yet-minor
actress sixty years earlier.”
Junior Bender is an expert burglar but he also has a second
specialty – he is the “go-to guy” whom criminals
call in when they want an investigation conducted on the sly.
The Irwin Dressler mentioned above is the most feared man
in Hollywood because of his connection to the mob. Even in
his early nineties, Dressler’s word is law in Tinsel
Town.
Delving far back into the past, Dressler wants Bender to find
out who was responsible for destroying Dolores La Marr’s
movie career. Perhaps a real crime wasn’t committed
when compromising photos of the starlet were taken at a Las
Vegas party with mob bosses years ago, but once Bender begins
digging blood begins to flow.
Someone doesn’t want anyone revisiting the past and
even with his own life suddenly on the line, Bender has no
choice; he must keep digging until he finds where the clues
lead.
Able to combine humor with mayhem and make it all seem plausible,
Timothy Hallinan has created a popular series featuring a
very endearing protagonist. The author’s wit is as sharp
as the knife the villain wields in this clever mystery. If
you’d like a refreshing change of pace from more serious
thrillers, give this comic crime caper a try – it’s
sure to amuse and entertain you.
