Detective Constable Fiona “Fi” Griffiths is assigned
to investigate a murder in Cardiff, South Wales. As a teen,
Fi suffered from Cotard's Syndrome, a disease often caused by
trauma that leaves the sufferer believing he or she is dead.
Fi is able to function normally as a detective and even has
a romantic relationship with David “Buzz” Brydon,
a fellow policeman. Unlike most people, Fi feels an affinity
for the dead, and it’s this quality that makes Fi such
an unusual and interesting character. It’s also the reason
Fi finds a leg and the head of a murder victim eventually identified
as Mary Langton.
While newer male body parts are soon found, Fi fears there’s
a possible connection between Mary and her adoptive father,
who has a criminal record, but hopes she’s wrong. Fi believes
her father knows more about her background than he lets on.
Told he and his wife found her abandoned in his car when she
was only two, it’s understandable that Fi would want to
learn the truth about her biological parents.
Love Story, With Murders is a tense mystery centering
on a truly unique and fascinating character. As a detective,
Fiona is headstrong and determined, often straying beyond the
rules to solve cases – and often faces danger as a result.
The plot is compelling, the story a tense and gripping read.
Though the novel involves several murders, both old and new,
Fiona’s search for her real parents is the biggest mystery
of all, and remains unsolved. Hopefully another release is in
the works. It’s one I'll definitely read.
Even though I didn't read the first release in the series, Love
Story, With Murders stands on its own as one of the most
unusual and engrossing mysteries I've enjoyed in a long time. |
