A large cat, some dogs, and a guinea pig, oh my! A ferret, a “barkerey”, and cool pet clothing, and a murder, oh my!

Izzy McHale isn’t all together sure she has what it takes to run a successful business. However, she launches Trendy Tails Boutique in her small town of Merryville, Minnesota. The grand opening party brings in many people with their pets. An unwanted guest is Sherry Harper, who lives to protest anything and everything, and is upset about the concept of people dressing up their pets.

When Sherry is poisoned outside the shop, Sherry’s business partner and best friend, Rena, is considered a suspect based on a past confrontation, which landed Rena in jail. There is no shortage of other suspects, however, and Izzy sets to work to sniff out the true killer.

There are already so many cozy mystery books with pet-based themes that I was not sure if this one would be unique, or run-of-the-mill. I’m pleased to say that author Annie Knox has crafted a clever mystery that stands out from the crowded field of cozies. I found the characters to be likeable and smart. Their relationships are realistic and as the tale unfolds, readers will get to know Merryville and some of the back-story of the residents.

Paws for Murder is an impressive start to a new series. The next book, Groomed for Murder will be out in September 24.
