Sister
Evangeline (Eve) is a member of the Benedictine Order in Pecos,
New Mexico. Daniel, a long-time family friend and police officer,
visits Sister Eve to relay bad news: Her father, the "Captain,"
must have his leg amputated due to diabetes. Eve arranges
for a temporary leave from the monastery so she can care for
him.
Sister Eve's father, Jackson Divine, is a retired police captain
who runs a detective agency in Madrid, New Mexico, specializing
in finding lost people. His current client is Megan Flint,
a beautiful movie star searching for her missing fiancé,
Hollywood director Chaz Cheston. But when Cheston turns up
dead, the police question Megan. After all, Chaz was married
and the "other woman" is the usual suspect. When
Sister Eve reasons to the "Captain" why Megan couldn't
have killed Cheston, her father is pleased that Eve is a good
investigator. While they hunt for the real killer, Eve searches
her true feelings - should she remain a nun or follow in her
father's footsteps?
Sister Eve is truly charming. She rides a motorcycle and wears
cowboy boots underneath her habit. And speaking of habits,
she continually gets into tight spots due to her insatiable
curiosity. These enchanting idiosyncrasies are just the topping
to a wonderful character who had me laughing, reading into
the wee hours of the night, and simply enjoying a terrific
who-done-it featuring a unique heroine who savors her faith
and her surroundings as much as she does a little detecting.
Ms. Hinton's characters are all realistic and well-developed;
especially the "Captain" who is reluctant to wear
his artificial limb. Family, faith and friends are foremost,
making this novel heartwarming, clever, entertaining and hard
to forget. I certainly look forward to more releases from
this wonderful author.
