While
Some Like it Witchy is not the first release in the
series, author Heather Blake included enough unobtrusive backstory
for me to quickly grasp the characters’ relationships
with others in the magical Enchanted Village. Many of the
characters are a “crafters” with special abilities.
Darcy is able to help grant wishes and is nicknamed the “Grim
Reaper” because she has an uncanny talent for discovering
and solving murders.
Darcy and her cousin Cherise discover murdered real estate
agent Raina Gallagher in an empty house before a showing,
grasping an amulet and other clues that point to her killer.
The house was owned by the Tavistock family, one of whom stole
a large amount of diamonds in the past and hid the treasure
in the house. Now that it’s on the market, did someone
trying to find the hidden diamonds kill the agent?
Darcy is asked to investigate the murder by the “Elder”
and, while investigating the death and the past diamond heist
for clues, her list of suspects grows.
I loved the cast of characters in this book. Nick, a single
father and policeman, helps Darcy but, being an understanding
hunk, gives Darcy the freedom she needs to follow the clues
to uncover the mystery behind Raina’s death. Darcy is
also a matchmaker, whose machinations brought laugh-out-loud
humor to the story, but I felt a wide range of emotions, especially
the sadness Darcy felt while investigating her own mother’s
death and the growing romance between her and Nick.
Some Like it Witchy is a wonderful fairy tale for
adults, replete with witches, familiars, crafters, romance
and especially a solid mystery. Charming characters, like
Mrs. P, a mouse familiar, and Archie the parrot, add to the
charm of the story. An interesting, magical setting and an
entertaining plot made this a win-win for me.
