Hachette audio
is releasing some popular Strand Magazine Short Stories in
audio. I think it’s a great idea; nothing better than
a short story while doing chores. The better the story, the
quicker time flies.
Palmer pens a tale about a criminal in a factory
town looking to set himself up for life. He wants to do it
the easy way, and illegally, of course. He decides to rob
old Ms Harper, better known as Harpy. When he was young it
was rumored she was a witch or something close to it. John
breaks in the mansion and begins the search for Harpy’s
millions. Harpy appears and their encounter is strange, to
say the least. John walks away feeling the world is at his
feet. Listeners witness a change in John. The money rolls
in and his ego grows, making him careless….
The Deal is quite captivating for
a short story. A criminal meets an old woman rumored to have
power, and his approach in life is changed forever. I felt
like I was listening to John’s change in slow motion.
Each time he made a decision, I’d stop and wait, wondering
if Harpy had conned him or if this was it…
