Maggie Toussaint's spine-tingling paranormal has it all: Scheming
in-laws, lost pirate treasure, ghostly apparitions, evil spirits
and bloody murder.
Baxley Powell supports herself and her 10-year-old daughter
Larissa by taking care of pets and trimming plants. She also
works part-time for Sheriff Wayne Thompson as a dreamwalker,
using her skills to communicate with the dead. Through visits
to the "other side," Baxley has learned that her
husband isn't deceased, just missing from his special military
assignment. In his absence, his parents ask that Larissa visit
during the summer, only to later refuse to return their granddaughter,
believing their wealth makes them better providers.
Baxley's friend Charlotte is writing a newspaper article on
haunted houses in Sinclair County, Georgia. She asks Baxley
to go with her to June's Folly, a dilapidated house haunted
by a dog. When the apparition throws Baxley's powers off kilter,
she gets trapped in limbo until Rose, a demon entity, helps
her escape. Baxley's skills slowly return, allowing her to
help Sheriff Thompson investigate the murder of a movie star's
assistant and female charter boat captain with whom he was
having an affair. Unfortunately, the investigation into the
killer's identity, and the steady drain on her abilities,
only complicates Baxley's life.
Who is it Baxley senses watching her from the woods outside
her home? Can she fight her in-laws and keep her daughter?
Will she owe the demon Rose more than she can repay? These
questions and more make for a tightly-knit, not-to-be-missed
thrilling paranormal. The addition of a Stinger, a medium
whose skill augments Baxley's talents, added a comical touch
and the promise of an investigative partnership with more
excitement to come.
Doggone It is a fast-paced mystery, jam-packed with and engrossing
plot and enough suspense to keep me glued to the pages. I
didn't want the story to end and definitely look forward to
the next release in this outstanding series.
