Missy
DuBois is a milliner specializing in wedding styles who runs
a shop called Crowning Glory in Louisiana. Her latest job
sounds a dream, making a wedding veil for a wealthy bride
and staying at the luxurious Morningside Plantation. But it
soon turns into a nightmare when the bride is found dead,
a ghost in Civil War attire roams the corridors at night and
everybody seems to have a motive.
This one hits the ground running with Missy and her dress
designer friend Ambrose arriving at the plantation. It doesn't
take long before there is a body and the rest of this story
involves plenty of detection as Missy turns sleuth and goes
all-out to discover whodunit. If you are tired of mysteries
featuring a lot of romance you won't find much here, and other
clichés such as hot cops, wacky parents and ex-husbands
are also missing. In their place is a fairly linear tale that
introduces several series characters, has a good sense of
where it is set and a likeable protagonist. This is the first
in the series but I hope that we will get more of an impression
about the appearance of the two main characters. Getting to
know them gradually through Missy the narrator is a good idea
but by the end of the book details are somewhat lacking. However,
this is a small price to pay for a cliché-busting debut
that promises to get even more interesting as we get to know
the people and see where they work. An entertaining page-turner.
