When Tanya Dubois
finds her husband lying dead at the foot of the stairs, she
flees, knowing her shady past will make her suspicious in
the eyes of the police. Besides, she has no proof that her
husband’s death wasn’t an accident. It soon became
clear to me that Tanya is a master of disguise, a chameleon
who quickly morphs into Amelia Keen, the first of many false
identities this strong heroine undertakes in an effort to
escape her tortured past and a dangerous pursuer. She does,
however, have some shady resources. A man from her past helps
her secure a false identity, but he also wants her dead, giving
Tanya an excellent motive to continually find false identities
and stay on the run. Tanya discovers an ally in Blue, a woman
who works at a bar who is also sporting a false identity.
Blue kills for Tanya, then helps her secure a new identity
as Debra, a schoolteacher. Like all the aliases before, it’s
one that doesn’t last.
Although Tanya is a master of disguise, we discover through
emails she sends to a man named Ryan that her real name is
“Jo.” She apparently loved him deeply, and his
betrayal was the prime reason Tanya started running away many
years before. But will she ever stop running?
Lisa Lutz has written a novel of tour de force action. The
Passenger is an exciting, frantic voyage with unexpected
twists and turns. I enjoyed the intriguing mystery regarding
Tanya’s past, revealing Tanya as a strong willed, determined
young woman. The author’s use of first person provided
immediacy to an amazing character portrayal, for the heroine’s
tension and frustration became mine. I didn’t want to
put novel down, not for a minute. Buckle your seat belts –
the ride is well worth the journey.
