When
Abby is placed in jail for contempt of court, she meets Skylar
Miller, who is sentenced to death for murdering her son. Abby’s
psychic sense tells her that Skylar has been falsely accused,
but the evidence – a knife bearing Skylar’s fingerprints
in blood – can’t be disputed. Or can it?
Abby sets out to prove Skylar’s innocence with the help
of her FBI Agent husband, Dutch, and her BFF and PI partner,
Candice. Their investigation reveals that, when Skylar’s
son was murdered, her husband was out of town and, since Skylar
is a recovered alcoholic, her parents testified against her
in court.
That was ten years before, and now Skylar’s last appeal
has failed. It’s up to Abby and her psychic “radar”
to discover who framed Skylar and murdered her son before
Skylar’s time is up. While Dutch and Candice help with
aspects of the investigation, Oscar, Dutch’s co-worker,
pours through old case files with Abby, searching for any
shred of evidence that will prove Skylar is innocent.
Skylar’s feeling of hopelessness and loss is evident
throughout the novel, as is Abby’s sense of frustration
when she encounters roadblocks in her investigation. I eagerly
poured through the pages, hoping Abby would find the clues
she needs.
I enjoyed occasional relief from the escalating tension as
Abby helps Oscar, predicting a course of action for him to
take to improve his lonely lifestyle, and seeing the steps
he takes to make those changes. The results were thoroughly
satisfying.
Once again, Victoria Laurie has written an outstanding, emotionally
charged and unforgettable mystery. The awareness that an innocent
person’s death is eminent and that time was ticking
created a tension worthy of Hitchcock. This impressive who-done-it
grabbed me by the collar and wouldn’t let go.
