What
the truth knows
. -- Truth or Die, James Patterson.
Truth or Die begins with Dr. Hellerman, an acclaimed
neurologist and a loner with secrets, being hijacked while
jogging. Hellerman's secret life has led him into a trap.
Next, a tryst between Attorney Trevor Mann and girlfriend
Claire Parker, a National affairs reporter for the New York
Times is interrupted. They, too, have secrets so when Claire
receives a call on her third phone (for sources only) she
has to leave. Trevor knows something terrible has happened,
but their unwritten ground rule keeps him from asking. Detective
Lamont calls and asks Trevor to come to his precinct because
Trevor knows the victim. No matter how much Trevor has experienced
in his life as Manhattan's former Assistant District Attorney
he quickly discovers he can still be taken by surprise. Trevor
receives a shock that leads him on a heart-wrenching, complicated,
not to mention deadly ride that includes a 17-year-old science
genius named Owen Lewis. It's up to Trevor and Owen to keep
this secret from the government and the terrorists.
Patterson's co-writer of Truth or Die is Howard Roughan,
and it seems to be a charmed pair because the two have six
other very popular stand-alone titles. Roughan also has a
couple of suspense titles of his own.
Edoardo Ballerini narrates the audio version. Ballerini's
smooth narration gives us a front row seat into Trevor's dangerous
encounters and stunning revelations. Ballerini is a four-time
AudioFile Earphones Award winner. He also narrates Patterson's
NYPD Red series.
