Book
three of the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery series continues
in the tradition of the first two. Gemma Doyle and best friend
Jayne Wilson are yet again involved in the murder of a visiting
celebrity. This time, it's Sir Nigel Bellingham, a noted actor
who has come to Cape Cod to perform in a local stage production
of “The Hound of the Baskervilles.” Sir Nigel
has had better days and has become a slave to alcohol and
obviously unable to perform. This is made clear as a bell
when he can't deliver a few lines coherently at an afternoon
tea held as a fundraiser.
Sir Nigel goes
missing shortly thereafter, and after Gemma and Grant Thompson
discover his body at the foot of a cliff, speculation about
the manner of death – accident, suicide or murder- runs
wild. Many people had a reason to want to kill the actor,
but Jayne's mother, Leslie is harboring a secret and circumstantial
evidence points to her as the most likely suspect.
Gemma knows that
Leslie isn't a killer and sets out to unmask the real villain
before the police arrest her and close the case. The game
is afoot and danger abounds as time runs out.
I continue to
enjoy this series a lot. The story is plausible, the characters
enjoyable and there's just enough humor and romance to keep
things lively. I hope that Vicki Delany will be able to craft
many more books in this clever series. Highly recommended!
