The Winslow family, Anna, husband Burt and teenage son Jake live on Quarry Island in Maine, where it is a small enough community that just about everyone knows your name and everything about you. It is a quiet and predictable life for them. Until suddenly, it isn’t.

Burt’s brother, Carl, is murdered and it appears that Burt’s missing rifle killed him. Anna knows Burt wouldn’t have done such a thing, but the list of potential suspects is shedding no light on who could have shot him. Their son, Jake, seems to know more than he is telling. Is he involved?

Meanwhile, Anna has recently discovered and met a younger sister she never knew existed. Izzie Jordan comes to Portland and, as the sisters get acquainted with each other, they become amateur sleuths with the goal of proving Burt’s innocence after he is arrested.

I found this to be a captivating read, and it is so well written and plotted that I have no hesitation about recommending it to everyone who loves a good mystery! The setting and atmosphere are perfectly drawn, and I really enjoyed getting to know the various characters and how they interact.

If I were a betting woman, I would indeed bet that this is the beginning of a highly successful new series. It is reminiscent of Sarah Graves writing, yet Cornelia Kidd’s voice is definitely her own.
