A Dissembler
by Fenella-Jane Miller
Heiress Marianne Devenish arrives at her great-uncle’s house expecting to see him, but instead a "cousin", who is
actually the incognito Earl of Wister hoping to entrap a traitor, meets her. Her parents are both dead, and her
grandmother is keen to hand her over to somebody else; but she cannot stay in a bachelor establishment. Instead,
the lonely girl is sent to the welcoming bosom of the friendly but impecunious Grierson family at nearby Frating
Hall. But the Earl soon discovers that he is getting rather fond of his young charge - but how can she marry
somebody who is actually somebody else?
It is books like this that remind me why I love Regencies so much. A frothy, sprightly story involving smugglers,
a dastardly figure out of the heroine’s past, racing, country house life and more kept me reading late into the night.
It is a story where nothing is quite what it seems, the Earl not being the only "dissembler" as Marianne and
several of the other characters have secrets of their own.. I like the way this story immerses the reader in the
period, sketching in the necessary details with a broad brush and keeping the plot bubbling merrily along. I’ll
be reading another. If you like Regencies, this is just the book for you. |
