Every Breath You Take
by Judith McNaught
Michael Wyatt is a self made man. He was brought up to believe that a wealthy American
patron took an interest in him as an abandoned orphan baby. He was sent to live with a
family in Italy when he was only a few months old. He was sent to the best schools in
Europe and ended up wealthy and handsome. William Wyatt, grandson of philanthropist Cecil
Wyatt pays Michael a visit and reveals to him that from information he had just uncovered
they are half brothers. Their father had an affair with his secretary which resulted in
Michael's birth.
William's father apparently commits suicide by diving out of a window. William turns
up missing. Thus Michael is in line for the family fortune. Foul play is suspected in
both instances. Michael becomes the prime suspect. He goes on vacation to a Caribbean
island resort where he meets Kate Donavan from Chicago. Kate is recovering from the sudden
death of her beloved father. She is there with her long-term lawyer boyfriend, except he isn't
there because of a complication with a law trial. They become romantically involved. Kate
is unaware of who he is, and when she returns to Chicago thinks he has deserted her. There
are many complications concerning his relationship with the Wyatt family and his possible
guilt.
This is McNaught's first book since Night Whispers in 1999. It is an enjoyable
romantic suspense story but not up to her past endeavors. The characters are unforgettable:
Kate is gorgeous and intelligent; Michael is handsome and charming. The repartee between
the two of them is witty. The atmosphere of the island and of Chicago is successfully
evoked. The plot is interesting but predictable. There is no real suspense. The guilty
party will soon be determined. This is a quick read for a pleasant evening's enjoyment. |
