A Game of Pleasure
by Barbara Satow
Lord David Castleton, recovering from a broken leg, is bored with the social affairs he is forced to attend for his niece
Sarah's Season. At one such affair he meets Portia Kirby. Portia, considered "on the shelf" at 30, is now companion
to her aunt, Charlotte Andrews. She is no beauty, but has wit, a sense of humor and a great understanding of people.
Castleton is greatly attracted to her and seeks out her company. Within a short period of time, he finds that he is
in love with her and wants to marry her. Portia returns his feelings but is unaware of his true feelings. Her cousin,
George Maheu, is a reputed rake and his friendship with Portia is a source of jealousy and causes problems. Castleton's
niece, Sarah, becomes friendly with Maheu in an attempt to ease his pain from the loss of his mistress. This also
contributes to the problem of a smooth ending. When Castleton proposes to Portia, she misunderstands his intentions.
There is much confusion before they can resolve the dilemma.
This is an enjoyable light hearted Regency romance. The plot is a simple one with a cast well developed with
characteristics that are pleasant and human. The spirit of the people and the place in time is successfully evoked.
The repartee between Castleton and Portia is witty and clever. The development of their relationship is a delight
to behold with both being human and warm characters. The incidental horse training by Ponsby and his instruction of
Frederick is a bonus. |
