Love is in the Heir
Featherton Series, No. 4
by Kathryn Caskie
The Earl of Devonsfield has a problem: he is unmarried and has no immediate heir to whom
to leave his Earldom, save for the son of the Earl's late second cousin. Unfortunately,
he's a twin. More unfortunately, no one is aware of which twin was born first. He appears
at the Cornwall home of Griffin and Garnet St. Albans. Like the names suggest, Griffin
has characteristics of being part eagle, part lion, for he is of sturdier build than his
brother and a lover of astronomy. Garnet, on the other hand, is refined and polished -
and a definite rake. The solution to the Earl's dilemma is at hand: the first of the
twins to marry shall inherit the Earldom upon his demise.
Miss Hannah Chillton, under the care of the Ladies Letitia and Viola Featherton of
London, is on a visit to Cornwall. Hannah has proven to be a good matchmaker, with the
assistance of her trained falcon, Cupid. While on an outing, the wind sends her bonnet
sailing away, only to get stuck on a protruding root in the cliffside.
Griffin, atop the cliff with his telescope, is startled to find a young woman hanging
precariously from the cliff below. He helps her up, more than surprised by her agility
and her demand that he replace the lost bonnet, which has blown away in the wind. Despite
this odd exchange, Griffin is taken with the young woman and promises to purchase her
a new bonnet. For Hannah's part, her thoughts remain on the handsome stranger, Mr. St.
Albans, who has taken her breath away.
Not two weeks later, Hannah and her duennas Letitia and Viola accidentally run over
Mr. St. Albans with their carriage. When it appears he is physically hurt and that the
accident has caused him to lose his memory, the three women insist he stay with them.
But the wounded St. Alban is far from the soft-spoken gentleman Hannah met on the cliffside.
Indeed, he cannot possibly be the same person, for he is an arrogant rake.
Garnet turns his attention to Hannah to help his brother, who has little experience
in playing suitor. Griffin does not like his brother's involvement, but he has to admit
that he lacks the rakish charm of his brother - and they both are desirous of a bride.
Hannah, for her part, discovers that Letitia and Viola have romantic interests of their
own, and sets about playing matchmaker.
Love is in the Heir is an absolutely delightful tale of matchmaking and mischief,
told with a wonderful touch of humor coupled with an exciting, fast moving plot. I couldn't
put the book down. Although this was my first introduction to Kathryn Caskie's remarkably
talented work, I can assure you it won't be the last. |

NOTE: Sexually explicit scene, unusual in a Regency romance, and quite tastefully done.
