Miracles and Magic
by Barbara Cary
Brienne Quaid suffers from nightmares and believes they portend her death. She drives to New Mexico to visit her
only living relative, Aunt Sophie, when she is caught in a thunderstorm. Brie barely escapes driving into Milagro
Creek and stares at the raging waters of her dreams. When she begins to slip into the creek, a man saves her, and
then invites her to his cabin until the morning. Brie is cautious, yet curious about the gruff stranger. Her natural
intuition has revealed his kindness, and his tormented soul.
Ex-lawyer Cal Porter is startled by Brie’s appearance. She bears a striking resemblance to the ideal woman he imagined
in college, the one who is the femme fatale in his latest detective novel. More startling, however, is Brie’s uncanny
ability to sense his inner turmoil.
Brie calls her Aunt Sophie to explain she’ll be late. When Brie reveals that she heard a female call out "Callan" -
Cal’s full name - and feminine laughter in the empty cabin, Sophie tells Brie that she has been given a sign she
must heed. As a mutual attraction slowly develops, Cal tells Brie he’s married. Brie is naturally upset, until she
learns that Cal’s wife and daughter vanished eight years before. Although they have been declared legally dead, Cal
is searching for answers to their disappearance so he can move on with his life.
Do Brie’s nightmares portend her death, or that of someone else?
Miracles and Magic by Barbara Cary is an excellent paranormal romance with characters whose emotions will
tug at your heart, and a mystery guaranteed to keep you turning the pages. Ms. Cary paints vivid scenes and emotional
relationships so well that I felt the main characters’ hopes and pain, their sadness and joy. I was hooked from the
first page to the surprise ending. Miracles and Magic is a must read. |
