Is it possible to heap so much praise upon a novel that it appears insincere? If so, I will have to rein myself in
for this review of Wendy Markham’s If Only In My Dreams because this is one that cannot be missed.
Clara McCallum is an actress on the verge of stardom. With a starring role in a wartime drama, playing the woman
in love with doomed soldier Jed Landry, Clara appears to have it all. A breast cancer diagnosis changes all that and
Clara is shaken to her core even as she is determined to cope on her own. It is while on location in quaint Glenhaven
Park that Clara finds herself stepping back in time to 1941 - and face to face with the real life Jed Landry.
Despite the incredible circumstances and her obvious disbelief, Clara feels a strong connection to Jed. It is
only when she has returned home, to modern day New York City, that she is plagued with conflicting feelings: does
she stay in her own time to receive the treatment necessary to save her life or does she return to 1941 and try to
save Jed from his impending death at Normandy? The reader feels Clara’s anguish as she struggles with the dilemma.
Wendy Markham writes with a style that is infinitely readable and with Clara and Jed she has created characters
that are sure to be remembered by those who enjoy their story. An interesting array of supporting characters round
out this touching story. Do yourself a favor... grab some tissues and immerse yourself in this heartwarming tale.
If Only In My Dreams will have a permanent home on my bookshelf.
