A Noble Place
by Anne Whitfield
Phillippa Noble knows what it is like to be rich... and desperately poor. Her father is a feckless man, a gambler
who has no head for investments and who has borrowed from his wealthy cousins once too often. Now the family is
hoping for a fresh start and has bought land in Australia for a stud farm. The road ahead will be hard going, but
Phillippa is sure that it will bring the family the fortune and status it deserves, as well as helping her to
forget the man who broke her heart. But there are many challenges ahead for her, and are riches really all she
wants to make her happy?
I have read more tangible accounts of taming the bush, but there is a lot in this book and not quite room for
it all to be developed as it could have been. For once there is certainly no reason at all to complain that the
book was too long - just that it was too short! This also shows that I enjoyed it, and I did. Bold, businesslike
Phillippa makes for a strong and interesting heroine, and anybody tired of reading about alpha males is sure to
enjoy reading about a alpha female instead. Australia in the mid 19th century comes to dusty life, and there is
the right mix of success and hardship in here to make for a well balanced and satisfying read. I’d definitely
read another novel by this author, especially if it was set in Australia. |
