To Love a Gambler

by Jenn Hoffmann

Life in Helena, Montana, can be tough, especially if you're a young female trying to pan for gold alone. That’s the situation Cora Sullivan faces as she walks into the local gambling hall, hoping to raise enough funds so she can have a square meal. Worse, before her father died, he took out a $5,000 loan which Cora needs to pay, or else she'll lose the claim. Then a handsome man joins the gambling table and wins her gold mine. Luck appears to have left her. Or has it?

Jared Mathews is a man running from a false accusation of a crime. He has no proof of his innocence so rather than go to jail, he escapes New York to get lost among the throngs of people headed west to make their fortunes. Chance brings him to a gambling hall and into the life of a beautiful, if stubborn, female prospector.

Knowing little about panning for gold but now owning a claim, Jared asks Cora to remain as a hired hand. Since Cora has nowhere else to go, she agrees. But neither one of them can prevent their growing friendship and attraction. Soon, Cora hopes for a future with Jared. Though Jared would like nothing better than to settle down with the spirited Cora, as a hunted man, he knows that can never be.

But luck often has a way of twisting even the worst circumstances around, especially when love is involved.

Jennifer Hoffman has written a delightful historical romance, full of humor and heartwarming characters that will linger long after the last page is read. Ms. Hoffman has done an excellent job of revealing the hardships, fears and often desperation of making a living panning for gold, and those of finding true love. Whether you're a young adult, or young at heart, you'll love To Love a Gambler.
