Avery's Treasure
by Kate Dolan
When I agreed to review Kate Dolan's Avery's Treasure, I gulped because it is a historical romance. I
don't normally review romances of any kind, but since this one was about pirates, I thought I'd give it a go.
What I found was "romance" in the nineteenth century sense, in the subject matter of authors such as H. Rider
Haggard and Robert Louis Stevenson. This was pure adventure with the addition of a couple of very capable women
thrown into the pirate tale. I was hooked!
Avery's Treasure follows the exploits of Arleigh Avery, daughter of a pirate turned plantation owner
now living in Nassau. Arleigh sets out to find her father's buried treasure and, thus, have the means to escape
the boring life she thinks she has with her father. With a treasure map in her possession, she sneaks aboard
Captain Vane's pirate ship, disguised as a cabin boy, and determines to get as close as possible to the location
where she thinks the treasure is located. In the meantime, her father hires Edward Talbot, an unsuccessful
merchant and pirate, to find Arleigh and bring her home. What ensues is a mad chase, plenty of disguises,
multiple maps, repeated ship stealing, shipwrecks, and unusual allies in the form of a preacher and a wild girl.
This is the stuff of any grand adventure.
Dolan's story is well researched and is based on historical characters, including Blackbeard, Captain Vane,
and Henry Avery. She, however, adds plenty of her own imaginings and introduces the two plucky women into the
mix. There are romantic moments, with couples pairing up in unexpected combinations. There is a touch of
Robinson Crusoe, Treasure Island, and Huckleberry Finn, though only in mood and humor. I
had a great time with this book and thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end. I only hope that Kate Dolan
continues to write more historical romances from this perspective of high adventure. You can be sure I'll have
my hand out to eagerly grab the next one. Well Done!!! |
