A Christmas Courtship
by Jeannie Machin
Blanche Amberley grew up in the beautiful Amberley Court, but unwise speculations have brought her family to the
brink of poverty. Now Blanche lives with her father in a cottage opposite her former home, which is now the property
of the soon-to-be-wed Sir Edmund Brandon. Blanche has met the odious man once before, now she meets his even worse
fiancée. But at least she has her own love to console her, Antony Mortimer, who is the son of a local banker. His
father might be the most unpopular man in the neighborhood, but surely Antony cannot be cast in the same mold?
No glamorous tales of the London season here, but a quieter country life in Gloucestershire. There is plenty
going on though, and Blanche gets to have quite a few adventures of the nocturnal (and not necessarily legal) kind,
but to say more would spoil a good story. This is the kind of obviously heartwarming tale to curl up with on a
winter’s night with a hot toddy, and Ms Machin fills the pages well with some likeable (and abominable) characters.
Perhaps everybody in here is a bit too black and white, on reflection, but nobody seriously looks for realism in
this type of thing — they are too busy enjoying it! |
