Confessions at Midnight
Mayhem in Mayfair Series, book 2

by Jacquie D’Alessandro

Widow Carolyn Turner, Viscountess Wingate, and the other members of the Ladies Literary Society of London read the scandalous book, Memoirs of a Mistress, by an Anonymous Lady. The book’s romantic trysts intrigue and shock Carolyn and her friends, but when the handsome rogue Daniel makes his intentions clear during a costume ball, Carolyn is more than tempted.

Daniel Sutton, Earl of Surbrooke, learns that Lady Wingate’s mourning has ended and becomes determined to woo her into his bed, a desire that has possessed him for ten years, since even before her marriage. Matthew, who is married to Carolyn’s sister, has been aware of Daniel’s keen interest in Carolyn and bets Daniel that he’ll be married before year’s end. Despite the warning, Daniel begins his seduction of Carolyn during Lady Walsh’s masquerade party, luring Carolyn to the terrace where he steals a kiss, little expecting her ardent response.

Eventually Carolyn agrees to an affair with Daniel, believing the affair will be temporary. Daniel wants the same, until he learns he has a competitor in Logan Jennsen, an American entrepreneur, and he experiences jealousy for the first time.

The unhurried pace of this novel lent itself well to the elements of seduction, of Daniel’s attempts to woo Carolyn, and of Carolyn’s internal struggle between her desire to honor her dead husband’s memory and her desire to experience the sexual fantasies that were missing in her first marriage. Daniel has no intention of falling in love, until danger strikes, two of his ex-lovers are killed and an attempt is made on Carolyn’s life. Who is trying to kill her, and why?

Confessions by Midnight is a deliciously sensuous story, one laced with steamy tension, delightful humor, vivid characterizations and a tight mystery. I loved Jacquie D'Alessandro’s first installment in the series, and definitely look forward to subsequent serializations. I can't wait to read the romance between Logan Jennsen and Carolyn’s friend, Emily; and of Gideon Mayne, the Bow Street Runner assisting in the murder investigations, and the beautiful Julianne.

Jacquie D'Alessandro has created a series that is sure to please... and make dedicated readers of us all.
