A Debt of Honour
by Fenella-Jane Miller
When Eliza Fox’s fiancé and father die within a short time of each other she is devastated, and throws herself into
managing the estate. She knows that she is unlikely to meet another man who wants to marry her as she stands nearly
six feet tall in her stockings. But she has not reckoned with her reckless brother Edmund gambling away the entire
estate, and to the villainous Lord Wydale. Neither has she reckoned on the lengths the wicked lord will go to in
order to get his hands on the estate, or that he has a handsome, kindly and very tall friend.
This is a story where the protagonists fall in love remarkably quickly, but then have many obstacles to overcome
before they can find happiness. Fletcher Reed is the perfect antidote to more arrogant heroes, while his erstwhile
friend is truly villainous and beyond redemption. Eliza makes for a pleasantly sensible leading lady, and pages
turn like lightening as I wondered what was going to happen to them next. Ms. Miller is one of my favorite
Regency authors, balancing the frothy, light style with some real drama and evoking the atmosphere, manners and
mores perfectly. Just the thing for any Regency reader. |
