Duchess By Night
Desperate Duchesses Series

by Eloisa James

Harriet, a bored duchess who considers herself a frumpy widow, decides to disguise herself as a man during a visit to the infamous Fronthill Country Estate, an early Playboy Mansion-type of facility with rich men and loose women always lurking about the place. When Harriet (dressed as "Harry") accompanies her friends to Lord Strange’s estate, she discovers that underneath his decadent exterior, Jem Strange is a pretty decent guy. On the other hand, Jem discovers that beneath Harry’s somewhat masculine exterior, he seems more like a she.

Duchess By Night presents an enjoyable romance in which the numerous chapters vary in length and tone - each with its own descriptive title. This fun volley back and forth between chapters parallels the playfulness of the story. Harriet and Jem fence, horseback ride, gamble, and play love games while she’s a guest in his mansion. Her biggest fear is not falling in love with the lord of the manor, but that he (a lord rather than a duke) will reject her because of her lofty title, hence her initial disguise to gain admittance to his ongoing house party.

The sexual tension takes a while to build, but once it takes effect - watch out! This passionate romance will sweep you away into an exotic setting with larger-than-life characters. Funny, clever, unusual, and romantic, Duchess By Night is a historical romance unlike any other you’re likely to read.
