A Highlander Never Surrenders
Book 2 of the Historical Scotland trilogy

by Paula Quinn

In part two of her series about historical Scotland, Paula Quinn presents a story packed with action, drama, and romantic tension.  During a violent time of civil war between "Roundheads" and "Royalists," three people get caught up in their own battle of wills:  Claire Stuart, a feisty Royalist rebel; Graham Grant, a mighty Highlander warrior; and Robert Campbell, a gentlemanly Roundhead and Earl of Argyll.  Together they travel from one dangerous adventure to another in hopes of saving Claire’s sister from an arranged marriage and discovering the truth about a dangerous betrayal that led to her brother’s murder.

Quick-witted, raised among boys, and trained in fighting techniques, Claire provides a suitable challenge for Graham, a handsome rogue who has broken countless women’s hearts in addition to the countless broken bones he has delivered in battle.  Although he and Claire feel an immediate attraction to each other, their missions, their suspicions about each other, and their unofficial chaperone (Campbell) make any real intimacy impossible.  Eventually they establish enough trust in each other to explore their feelings, but political struggles and legal requirements make a real union between them seemingly impossible.

Quinn’s three main characters in A Highlander Never Surrenders have unique strengths that make them likeable, but scenes involving Claire and Graham contain extra romantic sparks which ignite whenever they converse (or clash swords), making them especially exciting.  Their passion for their causes and for each other seems believable and should engage all readers who enjoy historical romance.  Quite a bit of Scotland’s actual history from this time is woven into the fictional plot, which provides a benefit or drawback depending upon readers’ preferences.
