Jane Sterling left New Orleans when she inherited an estate in West Sussex, England, from a distant relative. As
the story opens, Jane lives at Lyons Hall with Estelle Winward, a spinster, and soon learns of the estate’s dire
financial situation. When Lord Devlin appears at Jane’s doorstep late one night with his servant, stranded due to
a broken carriage wheel, Jane offers him the hospitality of her home.
Charles Worthington, Earl of Devlin, seeks clues hidden within the lining of the King’s Cloak, an heirloom
that has been at Lyons Hall for over 160 years. He’s on a secret mission for the crown and means to stay at
Lyons Hall until the clues are found, no matter the cost. When Devlin spies Jane riding with a stranger and
learns that the new neighbor is French, he becomes certain the foreigner seeks the cloak - a possibility
confirmed later by Devlin’s superiors.
When the elderly Estelle mistakenly gives the King’s Cloak to a reverend as a donation for the poor, Devlin
and Jane follow him to London, hoping to retrieve the cloak before it’s given away. Unfortunately, they learn
they’re too late. Devlin leaves Jane with his Aunt Charlotte, then searches the streets of London for the man
who possesses the cloak, while Jane and Charlotte devise their own plan to find the cloak - one that, to
Devlin’s chagrin, succeeds.
Now that Jane has the heirloom back, she returns to Lyons Hall. Devlin follows, determined to win back the
cloak. His pursuit leads him and Jane into dangers neither one anticipated.
Lord Devlin’s Dilemma by Jane Toombs is an exciting historical romance. While the mystery of whether
Devlin will find the clues hidden within the King’s Cloak centers around his own need to accomplish something
important with his life and fulfill his obligations to the crown, those desires become secondary to the feelings
the outspoken and clever Jane brings to bear within his heart.
Jane Toombs has written a wonderful story filled with charm, wit, and an enduring understanding of the
importance of love. You won’t want to put down Lord Devlin’s Dilemma but, once you have, you’ll want more
from this marvelous author.
