Natural Born Charmer

by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

Now in paperback, the best-selling Natural Born Charmer tells the story of a trash-talking, pixy-like artist in a beaver costume with an empty wallet and a bad attitude who meets a devastatingly handsome professional football player nursing an injured shoulder and driving an Aston Martin Vanquish.  This crazy, stagy beginning leads to a bizarre partnership in which the destitute Blue Bailey travels across the country with Dean (Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Rich and Gorgeous) Robillard to his new farmhouse in Tennessee, posing as his fiancée in order to keep women from falling all over him.  This kind of thing doesn’t happen everyday.

Even so, the quick-witted barbs they exchange, Blue’s resistance to his obvious charms, and both of their psychological baggage, make for a fast-paced, sexy romp that’s difficult to stop reading once you get started.  The story contains so many unexpected plot twists and bursts of humor that it’s impossible to know what’s going to happen next.  A rock star, a former groupie, an adolescent runaway, a cranky old dowager, and a liberal activist add to the mix of larger-than-life characters.

Susan Elizabeth Philips offers a well-written, well-edited, well-developed story in which the characters are flipped from their usual presentation.  The physically perfect (except for that darn shoulder) Dean knows the right things to say and do, while baggy-shirted Blue does her best to hide behind ill-fitting, ugly clothes, a bad haircut, and a sharp tongue in order to avoid charming anyone.  Warm, funny, memorable moments occur throughout the book, providing hours of romantic fun.
