Par For the Course

by Ray Blackston

Chris Hackett is the owner of Hack’s Golf Learning Center. His groundskeeper, Cack, is a funny old man and a good friend. One night a week, Cack climbs into the golf car that he customized himself and goes out on the driving range to taunt the customers. If someone hits the metal cage surrounding the cart, they get a free bucket of balls. It’s a lot like a dunk tank. And at $3.50 a bucket, it’s quite profitable.

Molly is a political correspondent from Washington in town for a couple of weeks. She happens to be at the golf course during one of the weekly taunting sessions. She comes up with a brilliant idea: What if, instead of just doing general taunting of whomever shows up on that night, you planned theme nights. On Fridays Cack could taunt Democrats from the safety of his golf cart. Then Saturday it would be the Republicans’ night to "Whack the Democrat."

Chris loves the idea, but even more he loves Molly. Wanting to impress her, he readily agrees. This soon develops into a thriving business, with everyone from bubbas and rappers to rival high schools having designated nights.

All is wonderful. Chris’s business is booming and his long distance romance with Molly is flourishing. Then a hate note arrives. Chris ignores it. Big mistake.

Although it's billed as a Christian romance and there are some religious discussions in it, I would not describe this as a particularly religious book. It is, however, completely clean of any sexual situations or references. It’s not as funny as expected, but it is still a very good book. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
