Right Here, Right Now
by HelenKay Dimon
Imagine the film Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but without the action and with more sex. You’ve just imagined the
book Right Here, Right Now, a secret-spies-seducing-each-other kind of novel where the witty repartee
comes at you so fast, you’re out of breath at the conclusion of each chapter. When the lovely Gabby Pearson
(disguised as an accountant) isn’t verbally sparring with the rugged Reed Larkin (disguised as a computer nerd),
they are making up and making out. Although Mr. and Mrs. Smith engage in mortal combat both inside and outside
the house, Miss Pearson and Mr. Larkin keep all the "action" inside the rooms of her condo.
The book begins with Reed breaking up with Gabby at a restaurant, a seemingly typical situation which ends
with an atypical outcome. Gabby uses shouting, sarcasm, and a well-aimed glass of wine to let Reed know she is
displeased with his decision to end the relationship. Right after the incident, Reed’s no-nonsense boss informs
him that instead of merely gathering information about Gabby (as he had been doing previously), his new assignment
is to act as her bodyguard during her dealings with a high-profile criminal. Although he believed his assignment
and the relationship to be over, this strange turn of events means he needs to reconcile with Gabby immediately
in order to protect her.
Most of the book consists of their arguments about whether to get back together or not, and the terms of their
mutual seduction. While fun, clever, and provocative, the dialogue can get a little tiresome when the two main
characters and even their co-workers exchange non-stop banter. Don’t spies know how to have a real conversation?
The story - like the verbal barbs - comes on strong and fast. Before you know it, you’re halfway through the book
and thoroughly exhausted from all the talking and lovemaking. But reading Right Here, Right Now is
certainly an entertaining way to wear yourself out. |
