The Roguish Miss Penn
by Emily Hendrickson
Stagestruck Katherine Penn has never seen a play, but she has just written one and longs to see it performed. But
this seems impossible, as she lives in Cambridge where plays are frowned upon. A chance meeting with Philip, Lord
Ramsey, makes it look more likely, as not only does his house boast a theater, but also Sturbridge Fair is coming
up. This should be an enjoyable time for Katherine, but it looks as though somebody is trying to kill her - but
why, as she has no fortune?
Another delightful Regency from the expert pen of Ms Hendrickson is always something to look forward to, and
here is a gem from 1991 available at last to UK readers. A pleasing picture emerges swiftly of Cambridge, academic
haven yet rural and backwards seeming with its stuffy attitude towards plays and players. There is romance on the
cards for more than just the protagonists, an amusing pet goose and the frisson of danger, as Katherine has to
dodge attempts on her life. I know I always seem to say it when I am reviewing this author’s books but if you can’t
have Georgette Heyer at least you can have Emily Hendrickson. This is the way good historical romances ought to
be - gentle yet sprightly, filled with unobtrusive yet informative research and exactly the right length. |
