The Saddle and the Sleuth
Fourth in the Damsels of Distress series
by Michelle Levigne
Michelle Levigne has to be one of the hardest working writers in science fiction / fantasy and romance. Just
thinking about how she can keep several series going makes my head spin. One of the most fun ongoing ideas is her
Damsels of Distress series about strong women, what she calls "tough chicks in fantasy and futuristic worlds." In
her latest, The Saddle and the Sleuth, Levigne combines intrigue with ambassadorial masquerades. Here,
Erandia, the lovely daughter of a colony-ruling family, must take on the guise of witless court beauty, to gather
intelligence for her exploits as The Talon, a masked avenger much like a Zorro of the spaceways. She is not the
true Talon, however; that role actually belongs to her father who, when this story takes place, is called off-planet.
Erandia, or Randi, as she is called by her family, soon finds herself entangled with an ambassador who also is
leading a double life.
I loved this little romance! It was filled with adventure and swashbucking, only in a futuristic way. The story
was well written and kept me reading long after I should have been in bed. Erandia is a delight. She is strong,
capable, and stubborn. And, her romantic thoughts are amusing.
Michelle Levigne is to be commended on creating such a delightful series. I'll have to find the other three
books, The Pirate and the Professor, The Prince and the Pickpocket, and The Sword and the Slave.
